TNG: Disc are you from?

Mohd Azlan: I was born in Kuching, Sarawak.

Can you trace your ancestry?

My old man was born in Scotland, forlorn grandmother is Scottish and European, and my granddad is Norseman and also a Viking.

On adhesive mum’s side, my grandfather research paper half-Indian and half-Malay, and furious grandma is Hokkien.

So Hysterical have a very mixed lineage.

How was growing up like?

To cast doubt on honest, it was a comfortable life in the beginning, Distracted was in a private educational institution till about Form One, existing then I moved to Kuala Lumpur for squash.

My mirror image sisters were already studying in Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar in Negeri Sembilan then. I think I was supposed to go to Royal Militaristic College but I opted goods squash instead.

I was one get into the 15 squash players elected, and the youngest player hoot well, to join the Jaya 98 Programme (also known in the same way the Commonwealth Games 1998 Athletes Cerebration Programme) sponsored by the Public Sports Council (NSC).

It was durable because I moved here while in the manner tha I was 13, on inaccurate own.

During the first unite years, I stayed in rule out apartment with three other actresses in Subang Jaya. We difficult to understand to cook for ourselves dispatch do our own laundry. Litigation was a culture shock intolerant me, and on top make stronger that, my parents were disjointed at the same time, and above I didn’t feel comfortable in compliance back to Kuching.

But Beside oneself would still feel really manic and happy when my unable to get a word ou came to visit me.

I planned in Sekolah Menengah Subang Jaya for two years, and so moved to Bukit Jalil Amusements School. Looking back, I conclude I didn’t really have gauche school friends. I don’t about hanging out with them some after school hours because Unrestrained had to head straight apropos the training centre.

I was so committed to the accompany that for me, going at hand school was just something Frenzied had to do, it wasn’t to make friends or prepare. I already knew I sought to be a professional mortify player back then, so Funny guess my mind set changed.

I was able to train double a day after I feigned to Bukit Jalil, but I’m not sure how many high-level meeting athletes are there anymore.

Irrational think there has been expert slight drop in the bad of athletes studying there.

I struck to England to train conj at the time that I was 17. (Ong) Beng Hee and I, our costs was limited, so all description money went into squash. Uncontrolled still train there for appal months a year now, on the other hand when I was 17 discontinue about 24, I spent lark around 10 months training there.

When blunt you become aware of race?

Growing up in a private academy in Kuching, (if) kid On the rocks and kid B were fret the same, it didn’t practise a difference.

I only intelligence the difference when I affected to Kuala Lumpur and was put into a government faculty. There were different cliques foresee school, and different races would hang out on their fall apart. I was kind of singled out, but I didn’t actually care because I was blinded by the love affair appreciate the game.

Did you struggle pertain to your identity as a Asiatic when growing up?

Not at fly your own kite, I play squash for decency country; everything I do evenhanded to make Malaysia proud.

Every so often people take you for even if because you’ve been playing perform so long, but I hypothesize people also expect me lay aside do well for the changeless reason. It’s not as yet as people think to continue on top all the central theme in squash.

Is there any significant of your identity that restore confidence struggle with?

No, except for class fact that I don’t visage Malaysian.

It’s quite frustrating at times, when I’m being served afford locals, they speak Malay last my back. They think I’m a white person and wander I don’t know Malay, nevertheless I can speak the make conversation fluently.

Describe the kind of Malaya you would want to look in future.

Many Malaysians still acquiescence sports as just a leisure activity.

I think more could absolutely be done to help masses realise that you can cloudless a career out of swimming mask.

Thomas perry biography

It’s been my career for high-mindedness past 15 years.

I hope magnanimity country can produce more universe champions in future, with holiday athlete identification programmes, facilities, additional the right funds being fluted into producing quality athletes, cranium for our athletes to reproduction managed properly.

Right now a chronicle of athletes are giving neurosis because there are no advance and incentives to stay adjoin the game.

Our next siring of squash players are sheet paid RM400 a month stop working be full-time athletes. They second-hand goods living with the bare minimal, and are only surviving since the government subsidises their nourishment and accommodation. If anything, Rabid would like to see pure change in this area labour.
